I have never met an Elisabeth Elliot book I did not love. This one is a rerelease from 1982. I happen to have a 1996 printing of this book. It was originally published under the title Discipline the Glad Surrender. I read it several years ago and have kept it to reread… it is worth reading again and again!

This is a beautifully encouraging book that points us to the importance of complete surrender to Jesus in our everyday life. The first 6 chapters of the book give us reasons why God is worthy of our surrender. She shows us why making a decision to follow Christ completely and surrendering to His will can bring us true joy and contentment.
Chapters 7-13 break down the 7 disciplines she focuses on for this text. The disciplines of…
- the Body
- the Mind
- Place
- Time
- Possessions
- Work
- Feelings
She shares personal experiences, life application, examples and lots of scripture to show us how to surrender in each area. I love her gentle soft spoken way she has with her writing. She carries a lot of authority by her own life and example to the world. She spent her whole life aiming for joyful surrender to a God who loves us and keeps His promises even in the hardest of times.
The last chapter of the book is a beautifully encouraging nudge toward daily surrender and service. This book has been so deeply encouraging to me. She urges us to live differently from the world but reminds us it is truly a daily surrender… you get up each day and look to Him to take you through the day with the ultimate goal of bringing glory to Him.
I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a deeper walk with Christ. Elliot’s words will convict, soothe, encourage and spur you on to service to a loving God that never wants anything but the best for His people. If we just surrender our will He will work in us in ways we never dreamed and have more joy than we could ever fathom.
This book was sent to me free of charge from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. All they ask is that I read it and give an honest review in my own words.
