Suffering is Never for Nothing by Elisabeth Elliot

It seems publishers are releasing quite a few books by or about Elisabeth Elliot recently. I have currently read two with two more in the wings for you. Her style is unique and her wisdom is endless. This book is no exception. Let me give you a little background. This book was originally a speaking series Elisabeth did for an audience. That means, that even with the edits, it reads like she is speaking to you. I found that charming! I have heard her voice on radio and podcasts so I could hear her speaking as I read. There were some editorial oddities along the way but the message far outweighs any transcription issues.

If I had money to do so, I would buy 1,000 copies of this book and give it to everyone I know who is struggling through something right now. It is a timeless message that everyone who lives will need to hear at some time in their lives. Suffering is part of the human condition. If you are a Christian you will know suffering but, as Elisabeth so eloquently says right up front…

“There have been some hard things in my life, of course, as there have been in yours, and I cannot say to you, I know exactly what you’re going through. But I can say that I know the One who knows. And I’ve come to see that it’s through the deepest suffering that God has taught me the deepest lessons.”

This is a beautiful book… a book of truth and comfort. It is a book to encourage you as you face hard things. This book is loaded with biblical examples of faith during suffering. She points to the cross as the symbol of suffering for us. She shares stories from her life and from her study time with the Lord. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

If you want to know more about Elisabeth Elliot’s life I encourage you to head to her website. She passed away in 2015 but her family continues to tell her story and share from that venue. She has also written many books, done many radio and other Christian media interviews and broadcast programs in her time on earth. She is a woman that we, as Christians, should know more about. Her suffering was certainly NEVER for nothing.

I found the original recordings offered through R. C. Sproul’s website. They are in both audio and video format. I found them after reading the book. I am glad to have the book in my hands but will certainly be listening to her words in this format again soon. I encourage you to read her words… underline and copy quotes from it. Mark it up and read and reread it again and again. This book brought me to tears in many places. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars with no reservations. It should be on every Christian’s bookshelf.

This book was sent to me free of charge through B&H Publishing. I was not required to read or write a review. I chose to do so because I feel it is of great value to the Christian’s daily walk and could not pass up the opportunity to share such a book with you. I hope you read it, too!
