O Sacred Head Now Wounded: A Liturgy for Daily Worship from Pascha to Pentecost by Jonathan Gibson

I can’t talk about this book without telling you about the whole series to date. The entire collection is so incredibly beautiful! These books are excellent resources for individual, family and church devotional and worship building. These books follow the Liturgical calendar. The titles of the books are taken from some classical and deeply theological hymns and I love that so much. I am of the opinion that these are still valuable in our day and age. We would do well to learn the old hymns, songs, and spiritual songs of those who have gone before us. These books share some of those treasures with us.

The first one, Be Thou My Vision, is put together as a Liturgy for Daily Worship personally or with your family. The second one, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, was designed to be used during the season of Advent. The third one that was released this year, O Sacred Head, Now Wounded focuses on the season of Lent through Pentecost.

The overall format is divided into daily readings… this most recent one covers 48 days.

Each day uses a variety of things to draw us into a deeper relationship with Christ and teach us how to worship better. These include…

  • meditations on church history,
  • calls to worship from both New and Old Testaments,
  • a passage for Adoration,
  • Readings from the Law,
  • opportunities to confess sins,
  • encouraging and comforting passages of assurance from God,
  • Creeds (more Protestant in nature)
  • Praise passages,
  • Catechism (again more Protestant) readings from the Heidelberg and Westminster Shorter Catechisms
  • Prayers for Illumination
  • Various scripture readings
  • Prayer of reflection,
  • and then special day readings for Maundy Thursday through Resurrection Sunday, Ascension Sunday and Pentecost Sunday
  • Prayer of Intercession
  • Lord’s Prayer
  • and Benedictions followed by a Postlude

There is so much from scripture and church history here for our encouragement, education and guidance. I have learned so much reading through these passages and days. They are very valuable resources to build our faith and grow our knowledge of God and His church. They are also beautiful books for your shelves and come in sturdy decorative sleeves for protection.

If you are looking for more ways to focus on Christ and guide your family or congregation into deeper worship I highly recommend these resources. I can see how these would be amazing resources for homeschooling families and private Christian schools, as well.

I was delighted to request and review this series. It has been a real blessing to me and I highly recommend them. In choosing to review these I was only asked to give my honest opinion from Crossway Publishing. If you have never checked them out I highly recommend them as solid spiritual content publishers. I have never been disappointed with a book or resource from them.
